- Revolution: it is the movement of the Earth which he moves around the Sun. It takes about a year for the Earth to complete its orbit around the Sun.
- Moon: it is a natural satellite of the Earth. It takes approximately 27.3 days to orbit the Earth. On its movement, it has four phases: New moon, First quarter, Full moon and Last quarter.
- The Solar System: it is a group of celestial bodies that revolve around the star we call Sun.
- The Sun: it is a yellow star which generates the light and heat necessary for life on the Earth.
- Planet: it is a large celestial body which orbit the Sun.
- Satellite: it is a smaller celestial body that orbit a planet.
- Asteroid: it is a rocky celestial body, smaller than planets which revolve around the Sun.
- Comet: they are small celestial bodies made of ice, dust and gases.
- Star: it is an enormous sphere in which nuclear fusion takes place.
- Constellation: it is a group of stars.
- Nebulae: they are gas clouds which reflect the light emitted by the stars around them.
- Galaxy: it is an enormous group of stars, gases and dust.
Unit 6 Glossary
- · Force: it is an action which makes objects move or change shape.
- · Machine: it is an object which uses the action of a force or transforms energy to save us time and effort.
- · Machine’s structure: it is the frame that supports the weight of a machine.
- · Elastic object: it is an object that can be temporarily distorted by a force.
- · Electric force: it is the force found in objects with electric charges.
- · Operating parts: they are the parts which make up a machine, like wheels springs, axles and chains.
- · Gear and chain: it is a mechanism which transmits energy from a gear to another, as in a bicycle.
- · Simple machine: it is a machine which has very few pieces, such as a hammer.
- · Combustion machine: it is a machine which uses chemical energy from fuel.
- · Magnetic force: it is the force that affects magnets and certain metallic substances.
- · Machine’s case: it is the outer part of a machine which protects it from dust, moisture or damage.
- · Friction: it is the force that can slow or stop a moving object.
- · Complex machine: it is a machine which has many parts connected together, such as a computer.
- · Mechanism: it is a group of operating parts which works together to carry out a specific function.
- · Non-elastic object: it is an object that remains permanently distorted when the force stops.
- · Gravity: it is the force that causes things to fall to the ground and remain there.
Unit 5 Glossary
- Electrical charge: it is the quantity of electricity that a body/thing has. Charges can be positive or negative. Objects with opposite charges attract and objects with the same charges repel.
- Electrical current: it is the flow of electrical charges in an body/thing.
- Electrical circuit: it is a closed circuit where electrical flow occurs. The components are: a switch, a generator, conductors (wire) and receivers (light bulb, motor).
- Magnet: it is an object that attracts metal objects.
- Magnetism: it it the power of magnets to attract other substances.
- Pole (of a magnet): it is the part of the magnet that attracts more other objects. Poles can be North or South. Two different poles attract and two equal poles repel.
- Compass: it is a device with a magnet that always point to the North of the Earth.
- Electromagnet: it is a type of magnet where the magnetism is produced by an electrical current.
- Power station: it is a place where electricity is produced from different sources of energy.
